Portraiture is, for many reasons, one of the most popular and most lucrative genres in the photographic field. Photographing people can be a very fulfilling experience for both photographer and subject. At the same time, portraiture can be extremely challenging, especially when the portrait involves a large group or family.

In our recent series of lessons, we showed you how we prepared for, shot, and digitally manipulated a family portrait taken indoors. You can follow the links below to refer to the first two lessons in this series:
- "Taking a Family Portrait Indoors"
- Family Portrait - Digital Manipulation
On the same day that we shot our indoor family portrait, we also took advantage of the beautiful morning light and shot an alternate portrait outdoors. In this lesson, we will explore how we photographed the same group of people in an outdoor patio setting using some of the same preparation strategies and a few basic light modification tools.
