Using the Narrow Portrait Lighting Technique / Young woman portrait

When you start any portrait session there are many decisions to be made. The primary decision to be made is what style of lighting to use. In this lesson, we look at one of the basic portrait lighting solutions that can produce great results.

The "Narrow" lighting pattern is one of the mainstays of the portraiture industry, and works well when you are photographing a person of size. Generally, when you use this technique you will place your key light more to the side of your subject. In this way you are narrowing the light that strikes the subject.

In this lesson, we will build the portrait in a step-by-step fashion, starting with the key light and then building our lighting solution from there. We will also look at the basics of posing and the effects of posing on the final look of your portraits. We will also cover the equipment we used to create this image and how to properly and effectively use each light, soft box and reflector.
