If you have been taking pictures for any length of time, you may already be aware of the distinction between the JPEG file format and the RAW format. Just about every digital SLR that we can think of, and some higher end compact cameras, allows the user to choose between these two formats. Since both formats have their own advantages and disadvantages, making a choice between the two is not always easy. Whether you choose to shoot RAW or JPEG will depend a great deal on how the image will be processed and used.

In the following lesson, we will discuss the RAW format and when you should use it. Then we will demonstrate how to use the Adobe Camera Raw conversion tool to process RAW files and achieve the highest quality image that your digital SLR can offer.
