Lighting and Exposing for High Contrast Reflections / Tail light on truck

Anyone who has ever photographed highly reflective objects knows how difficult it can be to achieve good results.

Unless reflections are controlled with adequate lighting equipment, they can be distracting, look unnatural or downright ugly.

The larger and more curved your object is, the harder your job can be.

This is precisely why it can take an entire day (sometimes longer) and lots of enormous lighting equipment just to light a single car.

To help save you the headache of figuring this out on your own, we decided to tackle some classic obstacles and solutions to lighting reflective objects. We will demonstrate some basic techniques in this lesson using this detail of a shiny black pick-up truck.
