In the days of film, photo processing was done in the darkroom. Now, in these digital days, the computer is a photographer's darkroom, where an image can be reworked and fine-tuned in ways unimaginable in days past.

What has remained the same is the vision and ability to get the best of an image. The film darkroom professional was a craftsman who knew how to use tools such as enlargers, chemicals, thermometers, tanks, and litho masks in order to make quality photographs. The digital craftsman of today has a new set of tools, namely computers and software.

The need for skilled knowledge of tools remains. This lesson explores using Adobe Photoshop by introducing the Toolbox and all of its available options. Upon studying this lesson, the viewer will know where to find the right tool for the task at hand.

Note: This lesson uses Photoshop CS2, however the tools and tool operations shown here will, for the most part, be accurate for version CS3 and for previous versions of Photoshop.
