How to Give a Photo a Brushed Shape Effect!

Growing ever more popular for displaying an image is using a brushed shape effect. This effect can add a unique touch to any of your images. It is rather easy to do in Photoshop with a little practice.  Here's how we did it.

Step 1. We started by opening the picture we wanted to "brush out," leaving an irregular shape.

Step 2. On a new layer, we selected a "Rough Round Brush" from the brush menu and gave it a radius of 75. Using a natural brush motion, we created a new shape using a blue color. (Keep in mind that whatever color you use does not really matter.)

Step 3. Because it was a separate layer, we safely brushed right over the child's face.

Step 4. We then selected the brush shape by clicking on its icon in the layer palette and holding down the "command" button at the same time. This immediately made the brush shape active.

Step 5. While the shape was active, we went back to the child layer and hit "command + J" which made a copy of the child's face ONLY WITHIN the confines of the selected area. By turning off all the other layers, we were able to see our handiwork, which had the desired brushed effect.
